Is it because that is how the early beginnings of our American families lived, true to a pledge to make it work in this new world? It's certainly not because everyone in my town decorates like this or because prims and colonial decor is easy to find around here. I do know I have a romance with the colors and textures of that time, and I am not even sure who to blame! </div><br /><br /><div>I remember visiting Williamsburg as an adult....I had never really had any exposure to antiques or colonial decor. I had started my own housekeeping with a mish mash of decor, nothing of note or pages from a magazine. That trip to Williamsburg "felt" wonderful. I stood on the lawn in front of the George Wythe house marveling at how my ancestor lived. I ran my hand along the rail at the church where my distant family member worshipped. I gathered my coat around me as I walked and imagined his life there in this little "town". It didn't help any that a big grey cat sat curled at the front entry of a home, or that the snow was fresh and the "colonists" far outweighed the "tourists". The temperature was quite low and the colonists had no time for small talk or greetings. They were bundled and, with heads bowed, made their way without acknowledging my presence or that of my companions. As the sun began to set, we warmed our hands outside the tavern and looked at the almost deserted street. We dined at Sheild's Tavern while musicians played and roaring fires dashed our chills. I felt like I belonged at that well worn tavern table. The sights, the sounds, the fragrances of Williamsburg delight me. The smell of Earl Grey Tea takes me back there immediately. </div><br /><br /><div>So, maybe like a genetic code, there are elements of my DNA that resign me to this decor. Maybe some of Elizabeth Wythe's decor choices have been imprinted in my mind from a time gone by. Though I have uncles and cousins and other relatives with the same GW initials in their names, maybe my "inheritance" has been the appreciation of all that is colonial and prim...while they keep the name alive, passing it to generation to generation, far removed from it's origin, my job is to keep the legacy of the family remembered in the textures and colors of my home. </div><br /><br /><div>No doubt you will see a fat cat curled up in my home, the warm wood of a tavern style table graces my kitchen. A roaring fire will dash your chill in winter and my attempt at a box garden might just happen this year. It also explains why there is a faint taste of Earl Grey Tea in my glass of southern sweet tea. </div></div></div></div>The Prim Colonialhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/12318341070204596629noreply@blogger.com5tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1400294791684446361.post-28738495409732199692012-02-16T20:40:00.004-06:002012-02-16T21:09:24.919-06:00A Big Hole!<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgi2jFDukU0QCDiW1IXCIxqKKkwLzXjfFeg1dTE8f5b2sg7x6Q9GHtttYfxFUlD4ut4cPnbTIJ5R1B6KPArbI35II1pIhx8JYBwzlS9Kl91siqXYoTUPBZrOjfPLnq8mz0Z1ZAAE3r3PfA/s1600/IMG_0401.JPG"><img style="MARGIN: 0px 0px 10px 10px; WIDTH: 320px; FLOAT: right; HEIGHT: 240px; CURSOR: hand" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5709936306365839922" border="0" alt="" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgi2jFDukU0QCDiW1IXCIxqKKkwLzXjfFeg1dTE8f5b2sg7x6Q9GHtttYfxFUlD4ut4cPnbTIJ5R1B6KPArbI35II1pIhx8JYBwzlS9Kl91siqXYoTUPBZrOjfPLnq8mz0Z1ZAAE3r3PfA/s320/IMG_0401.JPG" /></a><br /><br /><div><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiqPLOeytLnpwDP1V1oxLxpOyUty6qNBhrsfE-VxF6mdIfJth4yv-ChiuSDz5pQmSfOIOfsoWpcmdj_zi37fJdjhcZxGkL799DL16YVIB-of0aZ4f6wGLWwxHyprWH61gQJiyvYXaxAN-U/s1600/IMG_0427.JPG"><img style="MARGIN: 0px 0px 10px 10px; WIDTH: 320px; FLOAT: right; HEIGHT: 240px; CURSOR: hand" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5709936287887112738" border="0" alt="" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiqPLOeytLnpwDP1V1oxLxpOyUty6qNBhrsfE-VxF6mdIfJth4yv-ChiuSDz5pQmSfOIOfsoWpcmdj_zi37fJdjhcZxGkL799DL16YVIB-of0aZ4f6wGLWwxHyprWH61gQJiyvYXaxAN-U/s320/IMG_0427.JPG" /></a><br /><br /><br /><br /><div><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhMVztCGS4q8DrkDGXFbhRec8vE5bpPk8JflCrUA0hCOASr6hC7sodbhuVnt97jOGrMH5oJ9jB1ar2QG9RjACiiO-UG07kP6RmVQtw7sHaCrsA7AjyZruelaMxlG5dE1ih-cUJKPo1noSI/s1600/IMG_0440.JPG"><img style="MARGIN: 0px 0px 10px 10px; WIDTH: 320px; FLOAT: right; HEIGHT: 269px; CURSOR: hand" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5709936281162098850" border="0" alt="" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhMVztCGS4q8DrkDGXFbhRec8vE5bpPk8JflCrUA0hCOASr6hC7sodbhuVnt97jOGrMH5oJ9jB1ar2QG9RjACiiO-UG07kP6RmVQtw7sHaCrsA7AjyZruelaMxlG5dE1ih-cUJKPo1noSI/s320/IMG_0440.JPG" /></a><br /><br /><br /><br /><br /><br /><div><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiYikZT3WV1WqQrAHbFMQbz4R0ltGfOmSuVbr4mMr6oDe_CXw_FDyUFE5xAxY21mw2lMdu3EBhVLpiGp84fct8B_7KnV2_VVZI6_qO-whwlMWubtJHPFxSyRwnrWnNW_Rl0zg9qXAHFozM/s1600/IMG_0438.JPG"><img style="MARGIN: 0px 0px 10px 10px; WIDTH: 320px; FLOAT: right; HEIGHT: 261px; CURSOR: hand" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5709936248558578306" border="0" alt="" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiYikZT3WV1WqQrAHbFMQbz4R0ltGfOmSuVbr4mMr6oDe_CXw_FDyUFE5xAxY21mw2lMdu3EBhVLpiGp84fct8B_7KnV2_VVZI6_qO-whwlMWubtJHPFxSyRwnrWnNW_Rl0zg9qXAHFozM/s320/IMG_0438.JPG" /></a><br /><br /><br /><br /><br /><br /><br /><br /><div><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgyq79cieAzdAHoRtLu5uUyNUYglyW2HRN1o_9PZl_b_PPrQPfEquPxBAvLMMk1Eai8VXVBTb2PRSURVKIkuWBeA36O6rkkl8eCU7a5Li5m9Qm88zV98h6GIsWPseryc6ayIydDnLtRGvw/s1600/IMG_0439.JPG"><img style="MARGIN: 0px 0px 10px 10px; WIDTH: 320px; FLOAT: right; HEIGHT: 240px; CURSOR: hand" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5709936225268660370" border="0" alt="" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgyq79cieAzdAHoRtLu5uUyNUYglyW2HRN1o_9PZl_b_PPrQPfEquPxBAvLMMk1Eai8VXVBTb2PRSURVKIkuWBeA36O6rkkl8eCU7a5Li5m9Qm88zV98h6GIsWPseryc6ayIydDnLtRGvw/s320/IMG_0439.JPG" /></a><br /><br /><br /><br /><br /><br /><br /><br /><br /><br /><div>I have noticed that other bloggers experience the same BIG HOLE in their blogging from time to time. I always wonder what is going on for them, and lift them up in prayer, because I know what it is like to have a black hole absorb your time sometimes. Some bloggers share their experiences while others can barely glance at their computer. It is all a matter to issue it seems.</div><br /><br /><br /><br /><br /><br /><br /><br /><br /><br /><br /><div>Such an experience happened to me...so much so, that, not only did I miss many months of sharing with you, but also missed putting out my beloved Thanksgiving decor, my treasured Christmas goodies, and was only able to get a tree up and a wreath on the door. Blogging, though I longed for it, was out of the question.</div><br /><br /><br /><br /><br /><br /><br /><br /><br /><br /><br /><div>My husband had a back issue that turned into c-spine surgery....only after weeks of extreme pain and doctor visits. The final catalyst for moving forward was a trip to the ER by ambulance ( our third ER trip, first by abulance though) that finally set the days in motion for more tests, surgery, recovery and so on. Thanksgiving was a blur, while the days leading to Christmas were oh so busy. With work, his needs, a daughter in high school, and the regular daily chores, I missed all the celebratory decorating for the seasons! </div><br /><br /><br /><br /><br /><br /><br /><br /><br /><br /><br /><div>God is good however...in all things! In the midst of chaos, He brought so many wonderful treats to us! First, of course, was the successful surgery and recovery ( though I now know I will not be able to live in the same old folks home as my husband! :) ) Somehow, all the work got done at my job and at home. I had already done all my shopping and wrapping, boxes ready to ship. Those little blessings that made the stress less. Did my Christmas cards while waiting at the hospital. Then, our son in law came to town! You may remember he and our precious oldest daughter live in Hawaii and we have not physically seen them for over a year. He was selected as part of a team of pilots to deliver a helicopter to the Naval Aviation Museum nearby. Wow, what an honor, and oh what a special time to share with him. His pile of seabags tossed in my foyer made me smile. Soon after his brief visit, my youngest daughter and I were coming home and two little kitties dashed across the road ahead of us, missed barely by the two vehicles in front of us. Without a doubt, we rescued them and they came to be our tree decorations. They stayed in the tree til all the ornaments were off! They brought lots of laughter to our home. We were able to find a home for one, but we are STILL looking for a home for the other. Our kitties are enjoying the addition, but want their favorite sun spots back!</div><br /><br /><br /><br /><br /><br /><br /><br /><br /><br /><br /><div>I had high hopes for the season of "time off" to give me the opportunity to do some home improvements. You all continue to inspire me to keep on the prim path. Guess that will wait til spring. I promise to share!</div><br /><br /><br /><br /><br /><br /><br /><br /><br /><br /><br /><div>Well, the black hole has finally ended with the last of the doctor appointments for a while. My antiquing buddy Rebecka and I are planning some "jaunts about" in the coming months. I am ready to get back to the hunt, and leave the BIG BLACK HOLE behind.</div><br /><br /><br /><br /><br /><br /><br /><br /><br /><br /><br /><div></div><br /><br /><br /><br /><br /><br /><br /><br /><br /><br /><br /><div></div></div></div></div></div>The Prim Colonialhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/12318341070204596629noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1400294791684446361.post-4095189540518071492011-10-19T18:57:00.004-05:002011-10-19T19:36:02.412-05:00Look What I Found!<div><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh8qEI_Nc96Fcfz9h5Xn8THxVy-6xwO8RKbFdqz8TWVTlRZOM4JFzBwabCFJdq2fCLMzTuDIUwQm3tXU8W7aGmQocj6y95ocadGNlvveJQuWgwLhMBdKbCo6jYNxkYROu8SLsBhyphenhyphenVBXdgA/s1600/IMG_0235.JPG"><img style="MARGIN: 0px 0px 10px 10px; WIDTH: 240px; FLOAT: right; HEIGHT: 320px; CURSOR: hand" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5665360824099936306" border="0" alt="" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh8qEI_Nc96Fcfz9h5Xn8THxVy-6xwO8RKbFdqz8TWVTlRZOM4JFzBwabCFJdq2fCLMzTuDIUwQm3tXU8W7aGmQocj6y95ocadGNlvveJQuWgwLhMBdKbCo6jYNxkYROu8SLsBhyphenhyphenVBXdgA/s320/IMG_0235.JPG" /></a> Over the past several weeks, my junkin friend Rebecka and I have hit some local spots, including the storage shed of another friend. I did not need it, but it was marked SO CHEAPLY that I knew I could not leave it! I will find a spot soon for it as I am moving things around to make room for it. Even with the crack, it is a beauty for sure! I will be hard pressed to find a larger one, but you know, we must continue the hunt! What about this darling measurer? The local thrift store provided it to me at a lovely price. It has already been used for so many things, I am not sure what it will be doing on a permanent basis! It has great patina and is a nice size. <br /><br />Lastly, I have found that my youngest is growing up too fast. Always the bargain hunter, I found a fantastic red dress for homecoming for her. Last weekend was the big game and dance, and she looked radiant. <br /><br /><div><br />In all the things I have found, that is the one that is so bittersweet. She asked me what in the world I was going to do with one more wooden bowl. She could not understand why we could not really use the measurer when we were cooking together. She has, however, said many times on those junking trips "Look what I found".....so I know a little bit of me will go with her! That's the best kind of homecoming anyway! I always love the addition of my two favorite icons of Halloween. There is something about the grins of those jack-o-lanterns and the arched backs of kitties that really gets me looking forward to the visits of ghouls and goblins. One of my most treasured decorations for Halloween is a superb old black and white photo of my mom, dressed as a witch at about 7 years of age. It sits proudly it my foyer each year. She has always enjoyed All Hallow's Eve it seems.</div><br /><div>My mom loved to dress our home's front porch for the holiday. We lived in a house that had an alcove on the front of the house. Our home had a spanish flair to it's exterior, a popular design for it's time. With two arched windows with wrought iron inserts and an arched entry complete with big wooden doors, the alcove was a perfect spot for decorating. You had to step inside the alcove and walk to the front door. Short distance on a sunny day or regular evening, but on Halloween it seemed like an eternity to reach the doorbell. Some kids passed us by altogether.</div><br /><div>Early in day, my mom would collect some spanish moss from the trees. Draping it all over those arched windows and doorway created the perfect spooky look. Adding some yellow or orange paper over the lights outside added quite the eerie glow. Carved pumpkins, creepy music and a hanging ghost completed the design. She dressed like a witch and painted her face green. We loved every minute of it....so did she. </div><br /><div>We have long since moved from that house. We kids are all grown up. Mom's front porch now does not quite lend itself to the same scarey entry, but she still decorates and has the best candy on the block. </div><br /><div>My favorite part of Halloween is really the costumes. Once my girls came along, I could not wait for the costuming to begin. Never really big on the scarey costumes, we opted for odd, unusual ideas...or at least they seemed that way to me! A Leprechaun, the Monopoly Man with a Pair of Dice (love everyone dressing together to create a theme), Rudoplph The Red Nosed Reindeer, and a working Stop Light to name a few. We have always enjoyed coming up with an idea and dreaming up the costume. Quite the feat since I do not sew! Store bought costumes were not a part of their childhood. I hope they didn't mind too much!</div><br /><div>Now that the black cats are out, and the jack-o-lanterns are afoot, I know that Halloween is right around the corner. Fall is well underway and soon the turkeys will chase off the cats and pumpkins til next year. Until then, we will enjoy the our frightening felines and candle lit faces and await the tricksters we can bribe with treats. </div></div></div></div></div></div></div></div></div></div></div></div></div></div>The Prim Colonialhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/12318341070204596629noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1400294791684446361.post-37578616746113239402011-09-10T22:30:00.006-05:002011-09-10T23:28:59.519-05:00Fall in three phases<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgsssbujpWc8dcOsT0Nw7N03d2Hcs-Mz9AJCOSk1S478VdVgphbpmy6383pOz7_6vpvBEuG6xNDas6expIVsszVRngqXq_cxS8ju1y-GLDQvW8tpdANu5z8RMonCp9FhUJczvchPaoemB0/s1600/IMG_0203.JPG"><img style="MARGIN: 0px 10px 10px 0px; A little hint of color and then more color and then finally full blown fire at every treetop. When September rolls around, I finish out Labor Day with the final red, white and blue decorations, and this year, with September 11th being a 10 year mark, I wanted to keep my patriotic decor up a little longer than usual. Now the time has come to start sprinkling in the fall accessories and oh how I love it.</div><br /><div>Being in Florida, the weather has not quite caught up to the calendar. Thanks to a little Tropical Storm, we have been given cooler morns and evenings, but the sun still warms up qute a bit through the day. As you can see by my photos, fall is creeping in with the addition of pumpkins and harvest type decor. </div><br /><div>October 1st will bring all the Halloween decor to our prim home. I focus on the hocus pocus of black cats added to my pumpkin decor set out in September. Those ebony felines will take positions throughout the house to watch for ghouls and goblins. Our own Hairry Baker and Jackie will join them, though they would have to wear costumes to be in black attire! </div><br /><div>November will signal Thanksgiving decor in my home. I have been collecting turkey platters for a number of years now. Great large platters adorn tabletops and mantels reminding us the big celebration is on the way. I have an enormous Tom Turkey salt shaker that I so enjoy putting out each year. He is so proud and wise looking! He's probably happy the black cats disappeared come All Saint's Day! </div><br /><div>So it is, the three phases of fall at our home. Pumpkins bring cats that retire to turkeys. Acorns and bittersweet ( when I can get it! ) bring the out of doors in. The front porch gets a heaping helping of pumpkins and wreaths to welcome jack frost as he makes his way south. We enjoy the first glimpses of fall followed by the decor of All Hallow's Eve. Then, as winter draws closer, those majestic birds that were recommended to be our National Bird strut about the house. Yet, once that turkey hits the platter, I hear bells.....jingle bells that is! </div><br /><div>Happy Fall, Y'all! ~ Beth </div></div></div></div></div></div></div></div></div></div></div></div>The Prim Colonialhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/12318341070204596629noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1400294791684446361.post-72435586499335971732011-09-04T08:12:00.003-05:002011-09-04T19:50:01.541-05:00Prim and Pretty<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhYya0Vm4Wxv6mReFuluPatbOgfmarhhZpEiDoUBoIvGGYaX-dan5eUi5JCywC73nrZmJ9YJt-ArPxFZPSeDRDVGdP29Gh56BaG5KEZnKXkQXXibafuAg4H1M7FxhOrPtVa67llRn4sRbE/s1600/IMG_0181.JPG"><img style="TEXT-ALIGN: center; MARGIN: 0px auto 10px; WIDTH: 320px; DISPLAY: block; HEIGHT: 240px; CURSOR: hand" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5648670747178801858" border="0" alt="" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhYya0Vm4Wxv6mReFuluPatbOgfmarhhZpEiDoUBoIvGGYaX-dan5eUi5JCywC73nrZmJ9YJt-ArPxFZPSeDRDVGdP29Gh56BaG5KEZnKXkQXXibafuAg4H1M7FxhOrPtVa67llRn4sRbE/s320/IMG_0181.JPG" /></a>

I have assisted in hosting a few showers, and held a few on my own. It has been quite a treat. Many of the girls getting married have known my Loryn since kindergarten days. These young ladies have been to many a birthday party together, had many classes together, plenty of spend the night gatherings and so much more. The moms and I have been friends all these years as well. Loryn beat them all to the altar, finishing college in three years and marrying her sweet Marine Corps pilot Michael long before these girls met their young men! None the less, they have all been to each other's showers and some in each other's weddings. It is such a special time.
<br />
<br /><div>Each shower we have said our thank yous. The thank yous moms say when they know special women have helped raise their children. Thankfulness for prayers lifted, for kind words spoken, for encouragement and friendship, for blessings of hand me downs and carpools, of traded talents and traded photos through the years. Oh how these women have blessed me and oh how their sweet daughters have blessed Loryn as well. </div>
<br /><div>I wanted to share the latest shower photos with you. Since my home is colonial prim in decor, all those fancy clothes and cut crystal look a little out of place. I simply choose to use our decor to set the backdrop for prim and pretty. I hope the brides don't mind a little warm southern charm for their showers. It is all me, all from the heart and all about the simplicity of love between friends and family. ~ Beth</div></div></div></div>

It is only the second swap I have participated in and both have been delightful. There is something ever so sweet about receiving a package in the mail that is just prim! It is fun the gather some goodies together for someone you know only in the blog world and ship it out, knowing in return you will be receiving a box of goodies too! It's like having a birthday just any old time of the year and you don't have to count it!
<br />
<br /><div>As you can see, Amy spoiled me. I received a fantastic old book by Jules Verne with a gorgeous cover and spine. The cover has a sweet saying as well as the initial B on it. The spine is just as pretty and honestly it will be hard to put it in the secretary ( filling it with old books with lovely spines) and NOT display the cover! The box smelled wonderfully when I opened it...thanks to the scented wax corns with cheesecloth. The fragrance quickly filled my kitchen. A dual gift; both decorative AND fragrant. A pumpkin of some sort had to be included and Amy picked a darling votive holder. So prim and perfect for fall! Cats are a favorite for me and look at the PURRFECT make do prim kitty. What a sly face and bright eyes! Topping the package off was a cute ditty bag; love the reference to Salem and the plaid trim. So many treats in this box for me, definitely swapping is not a trick! </div>
<br /><div>If you have a chance to sign up for a swap, do it! You won't be disappointed. Think of the fun you will have shopping for someone, knowing it will make their day when the package arrives. Certainly if you are out shopping, you'll also find a goodie or two for yourself! There is not a place near by here that I could have found those wax corns so you can see how great it is to get things in your swap that you just can't get locally. If you are lucky enough to receive something hand made by the swapper then you will really have a momento to cherish. What great smiles erupt from this swapping we do.</div>
<br /><div>I have to say many thanks to Amy for a delightful swap. I will be sending her an email soon. I hope when my box arrives at her home, she will find the contents as special and pleasing as the ones I received. </div>
<br /><div>Happy weekend everyone....and while you are out there, pick up a few items for swapping! ~Beth</div></div></div></div></div></div></div></div></div></div></div>

<br />
<br /><p>Everyone has their favorite season of the year. Some people love summer; they love the sun and the surf and vacations and the fourth of July celebrations. Others really enjoy winter; the quiet of winter, the ice skating, the baking and nights of soup and sandwiches culminating with Christmas time! Some folk can't wait for spring; Easter and bunnies and new growth, pretty flowers and the songs the birds sing. This person loves all changes in our seasons, but is especially fond of FALL.</p>
<br />
<br /><p>Not sure what made fall my favorite time of year, but there are so many things about fall that I love! As a southern gal, we have to talk about the food first. Caramel goodies and cobblers are two reasons to love fall. I always have certain foods that I typically only make during the days of cooler air and big moons. Spicy chili, vegetable soup, beer cheese potato soup to name a few. Can't forget to mention the baked apples and toasted pumpkin seeds. Fall is all about comfort food. Homemade macaroni and cheese is good all year but it really tastes the best in the fall. Chicken and Dumplins are perfect for fall fare. One of my favorite treats that only seems to come out when the pumpkins do is a toasted marshmallow: placed on a saltine cracker and tucked under the broiler for a few minutes, those brown skinned mallows mix with the salty cracker and yum, it takes me back!</p>
<br />
<br /><p>As fall cools down, the fireplace heats up. Even in the south, we can appreciate a warm fire....we just turn the air conditioner to a cooler setting if the nip in the air is not enough! Cotton is harvested and little patches of it litter the roads and look like melting snow. Even the school buses look like a fall announcement; the golden yellow and licorice black mimic the colors of the fall sunflowers. The cats become a little friskier as the afternoons cool off. Baskets are filled with apples and pears and pumpkins galore. Even brown potatoes become part of the color scheme. Acorns and bittersweet can transform a summer white bowl or pitcher into a autumnal pronouncement. Extra linens like quilts and comforters are added to beds while peg racks boast leather jackets and thick sweaters in harvest hues. Even the candle glow seems prouder when the calendar marks fall. </p>
<br />
<br /><p>The Friday night lights of football games brighten the horizon. Carnivals abound. Craft shows are everywhere. Our town hosts a state fair where cotton candy and candy apples are staples. And then there is Halloween. The combination of black cats and orange pumpkins fill my home for the month of October. Up until a few years ago, we had our own resident black cat. He must have loved fall too. BC ( short for black cat) knew his job well; relax on the porch right by the pumpkins. His bright yellow eyes were the color of the harvest moon and just as big. On Halloween night we brought him inside where he sat in an upstairs dormer window overseeing the children as they dashed from door to door. </p>
<br />
<br /><p>As fall comes to a close in November, our family gathers together for Thanksgiving. Traditionally at my grandparents home, it was the culmination of the wonderful seasons sights and sounds. It was the time all my aunts and uncles and cousins could come together. It was a trip I looked forward to all year. Christmas at home was great, but Thanksgiving was spectacular. I'm pretty sure that is why fall is my favorite time of year. My sweet grandparents have been gone now for several years but my immediate family still enjoys a special Thanksgiving time together. </p>
<br />
<br /><p>There is no better time of year to me than fall. Sleeping with open windows and pulling up that extra blanket or curled up reading a favorite book while enjoying a cup of caramel cocoa are "fall onlys" that I love. It's a time of year I long for all year through. Just a few more weeks and the pumpkins can come out to play. ~~ Beth</p>

<br /><div>I must say I do love to tweak in my house and there always seems to be a project or two (or three!) going all the time. One of my projects is completing the decor in our guest bedroom, formally our oldest daugthers room. It is still in progress, with some things to do, but here is a glimpse of where I am at this stage. I guess Jackie thinks it is pretty great....still working on things all the time! </div>
<br /><div>Working on swap items for a swap that needs to be mailed shortly, still painting rooms in the house, just finished a wedding shower for a friend and have another one coming, and so many other little projects....always fun. ~ Beth </div></div></div></div></div>

In fact, the more jars the merrier is my thought. Jars have long been a staple item in my home; holding all sorts of things to nothing at all, depending on the jar. They appear all over our home...on counters, on shelves, in baskets, on desks, in cubbies. I have quite a varied collection of jars with no particular favorite, save one. That jar is a Lance Jar with a red metal lid. Like many items in my home, this Lance Jar has a personal history of my own. That jar always makes me smile and I see it daily in my kitchen.</div><br /><div>Years ago, let's not say how many, that jar sat atop a counter with its twin. The counter was a long work counter in my granddad's car dealership where we kids could pull up a stool and have a seat next to him. He would be busily handling customers there for car repair or ordering parts or preparing a car for purchase. He was never too busy to offer us a coca cola, which he would get from the drink machine. You know the kind; put your money in, open the top of the cooler and slide your drink down the track where sodas hung like bats in a cave. He'd pop the lid off and hold it up to the light to be sure the bottle contained only beverage.....he found an unmentionable "thing" in one previously, so he took no chances! Then he would say the magic words: " Go ahead and get something out of that jar there." Oh the delight that was! Filled to the brim with Lance goodies of all sorts, we could reach into the jar and pull out whatever we wanted! At the bottom of the jar lay coins of all denominations like the bottom of a fountain. You see, if you selected something from the jar, you just dropped your coins in the jar to pay for it. For us grandkids, it was all FREE! Granddaddy would just put his change in later, after all, he had to anty up when the Lance man came to refill the jar anyway. I will always remember sharing a coke and eating a Nekot cracker with my granddad and the magic that Lance jar had back then. </div><br /><div>For a while, that Lance jar sat on my kitchen counter filled with snack items for my girls. Of course, I kept change in the bottom just as a sweet reminder of the act of kindness my granddad had for us by allowing us to just reach in and make a selection without having to give up any of our allowance. </div><br /><div>The rest of our jars hold all kinds of things and are all sorts of jars from masons, to Planters, to Tom's and the like. Some hold soaps, some contain staples in the kitchen, some even have a few rocks, shark's teeth and shells. None, however, hold a special place in my heart like that Lance jar does. </div><br /><div><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgKQXwVgNUgonE2zhCaYA_ngxMRvxdMzr5CSmjsuIWGTbJI165IacixmBSA_hQyoxcDYilpKEQmyrlu2Gj9LZkgpFBoAXKXA0IQrhYsnLvw-DIs2g1SEzarCZ6xtyFQDKch4OPlbkGc4xo/s1600/IMG_0138.JPG"><img style="TEXT-ALIGN: center; MARGIN: 0px auto 10px; WIDTH: 320px; DISPLAY: block; HEIGHT: 240px; CURSOR: hand" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5634132396723363378" border="0" alt="" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgKQXwVgNUgonE2zhCaYA_ngxMRvxdMzr5CSmjsuIWGTbJI165IacixmBSA_hQyoxcDYilpKEQmyrlu2Gj9LZkgpFBoAXKXA0IQrhYsnLvw-DIs2g1SEzarCZ6xtyFQDKch4OPlbkGc4xo/s320/IMG_0138.JPG" /></a> The Lance Jar....Proudly on Display.<br /><br /><br /><div><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgoiRpEZJ-4PHNIm6DzpX_YsEyo5HI35UQSsVY8Gtj2ZQjTYBp8sH59HusHB5OvLoRrkvqrRTwzigLQJ8qAcamUILTYrUcybgMq_mjguiBYS-XCFjvE9MRR8llOctp6vf75Hbtx1C8ZSlY/s1600/IMG_0142.JPG"><img style="TEXT-ALIGN: center; MARGIN: 0px auto 10px; WIDTH: 240px; DISPLAY: block; HEIGHT: 320px; CURSOR: hand" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5634132394195367394" border="0" alt="" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgoiRpEZJ-4PHNIm6DzpX_YsEyo5HI35UQSsVY8Gtj2ZQjTYBp8sH59HusHB5OvLoRrkvqrRTwzigLQJ8qAcamUILTYrUcybgMq_mjguiBYS-XCFjvE9MRR8llOctp6vf75Hbtx1C8ZSlY/s320/IMG_0142.JPG" /></a><br />soaps in the master bath....<br /><br /><br /><div><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiImpBgBEHp4aBdAw51OAUFZBi1jMK17GGciHW2MxGaBNafe7IWc2dLkfqHCbOyeHSwnHLOM40gnvcUwoCg27hslB5ym2pVjgtXIJ4L8ralhvXO6qQzqT6aq-9MHPtIca2Tr_IsIpbS6-I/s1600/IMG_0145.JPG"><img style="TEXT-ALIGN: center; MARGIN: 0px auto 10px; WIDTH: 320px; DISPLAY: block; HEIGHT: 240px; CURSOR: hand" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5634132386714656002" border="0" alt="" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiImpBgBEHp4aBdAw51OAUFZBi1jMK17GGciHW2MxGaBNafe7IWc2dLkfqHCbOyeHSwnHLOM40gnvcUwoCg27hslB5ym2pVjgtXIJ4L8ralhvXO6qQzqT6aq-9MHPtIca2Tr_IsIpbS6-I/s320/IMG_0145.JPG" /></a> threads and buttons......<br /><br /><br /><div><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiBdk_Zxd_LDIub_tlbIhkDXCVFebwoMyKlCBX56vRGl5y7aM6DKTDNJ-kbKglQ32m1m48sopXJXmoHwdu2DOJTM0lMhfTC2DFFExEwHBWz49z6w67cWYQj5JMEbBR3fyFb6p6K16SSvY8/s1600/IMG_0146.JPG"><img style="TEXT-ALIGN: center; MARGIN: 0px auto 10px; WIDTH: 320px; DISPLAY: block; HEIGHT: 240px; CURSOR: hand" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5634132385330333122" border="0" alt="" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiBdk_Zxd_LDIub_tlbIhkDXCVFebwoMyKlCBX56vRGl5y7aM6DKTDNJ-kbKglQ32m1m48sopXJXmoHwdu2DOJTM0lMhfTC2DFFExEwHBWz49z6w67cWYQj5JMEbBR3fyFb6p6K16SSvY8/s320/IMG_0146.JPG" /></a> soaps, sponges in Olivia's bath....and a candle!<br /><br /><br /><div><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiOH4XBqybrCf5MvSwOLwYMK99dNZiSuGxssN7AcoO5KDotTz-uXUa0b1FR89ujGlJfvhT3afA3ow-qh6FnSHRcCYg_21KUVlPJA7VQje_iCnu0d2FHsaou8Q31kpRoYzMJEO5MqbNudOI/s1600/IMG_0149.JPG"><img style="TEXT-ALIGN: center; MARGIN: 0px auto 10px; WIDTH: 240px; DISPLAY: block; HEIGHT: 320px; CURSOR: hand" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5634132379590235170" border="0" alt="" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiOH4XBqybrCf5MvSwOLwYMK99dNZiSuGxssN7AcoO5KDotTz-uXUa0b1FR89ujGlJfvhT3afA3ow-qh6FnSHRcCYg_21KUVlPJA7VQje_iCnu0d2FHsaou8Q31kpRoYzMJEO5MqbNudOI/s320/IMG_0149.JPG" /></a> Nature from special trips.....<br /><br /><div></div></div></div></div></div></div></div></div></div></div></div></div>The Prim Colonialhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/12318341070204596629noreply@blogger.com4tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1400294791684446361.post-54727356350302567982011-07-26T20:05:00.002-05:002011-07-26T20:27:33.330-05:00An Appreciation for Shoes.<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj-ZnmbPT06gFpW0fxhmtpwlkUkCi7xglH22mCRsQiARXTD-Hg9wTaaOXqGW5E25RzWx9P2x70FaBKFQrL287dGRM1hEiFEGwoGnetVRqKnonxpLlioPjSWzeXR_RQp77Y6epPQyEv8WG4/s1600/IMG_1247.JPG"><img style="TEXT-ALIGN: center; MARGIN: 0px auto 10px; WIDTH: 320px; DISPLAY: block; HEIGHT: 240px; CURSOR: hand" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5633833712359893922" border="0" alt="" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj-ZnmbPT06gFpW0fxhmtpwlkUkCi7xglH22mCRsQiARXTD-Hg9wTaaOXqGW5E25RzWx9P2x70FaBKFQrL287dGRM1hEiFEGwoGnetVRqKnonxpLlioPjSWzeXR_RQp77Y6epPQyEv8WG4/s320/IMG_1247.JPG" /></a> There is something about shoes that absolutely fascinates Hairry Baker. I am not sure what it is that attracts our kitty to shoes, but it is a hilarious scene to watch. We kick off our shoes when we come in the house typically and almost immediately Hairry Baker is hugging and rubbing against the shoes. There is loud purring and chirps and quite a bit of "wallering around" as my grandma would say. Don't try to reclaim your shoe for at least 30 minutes. Sometimes, Hairry pulls both shoes underneath as if she is nesting and falls asleep atop the pair. She is a girl, so maybe that means something.....we do like our shoes.<br /><br />Hairry is quite curious, that is for sure. Anytime a new prim comes in, Hairry must inspect it. I love how she opens her mouth ever so slightly to get the best "smell" possible as she checks the ins and outs of a new piece. If Hairry could only tell us the history of a piece by it's smells. Once a piece is approved, Hairry claims it for several days, sometimes weeks at a time. I have a new piece picked up a few weekends ago, and due to lack of time over the past two weeks, it is still sitting in our foyer. I plan to get it moved to an upstairs bedroom this week, but Hairry is quite happy with it right where it is. Underneath is the perfect spot to hide in the early morning so that when Jackie decides to come down for breakfast Hairry has the perfect advantage of springing on Jackie's tail. The sun hits the top of it just right about mid afternoon so that Hairry has a superb spot for sunning. Best of all, Hairry likes to prop up against it and look out the side window by the front door as the walkers come by each evening with their dogs. <br /><br />Both cats are certainly a little lazy right now; it is so warm out. I am looking forward to the cooler months ahead to bring a little more energy to their steps and playfullness in the chilled air. No matter though the season, there will still be new prims for Hairry Baker to inspect, and more shoes to appreciate. ~~ Beth <br /><br /><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg53GKrmGLjM32QykrdE7k9Q2GwkIrDZMx_ONEj1KzemviHGjF3-I4zDkOhQeKnEoGO3XkdXQanar3dOP_OfqpfBi4kTt-ItR_AGFWttwmhc12eoHqudX-movJY0aFsy5y_MgU8QhhWi1g/s1600/IMG_1243.JPG"><img style="TEXT-ALIGN: center; MARGIN: 0px auto 10px; WIDTH: 320px; DISPLAY: block; HEIGHT: 240px; CURSOR: hand" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5633833708559853938" border="0" alt="" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg53GKrmGLjM32QykrdE7k9Q2GwkIrDZMx_ONEj1KzemviHGjF3-I4zDkOhQeKnEoGO3XkdXQanar3dOP_OfqpfBi4kTt-ItR_AGFWttwmhc12eoHqudX-movJY0aFsy5y_MgU8QhhWi1g/s320/IMG_1243.JPG" /></a><br /><br /><br /><br /><div></div>The Prim Colonialhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/12318341070204596629noreply@blogger.com4tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1400294791684446361.post-49167049091800031522011-07-20T22:40:00.005-05:002011-07-20T22:59:39.186-05:00One Day is the Someday that became Yesterday.<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgWv-lZXXECoK5pOlLxZsnam7ES2Wl9DUlY7ZbWG5cDw8XYPSVjgD7RauMSlYX4t8scZk7TXu6QXsD07eQAhgXmVKVGZjpkcGKS-smkeW5zo3pvcEGcVPRfm9UK9IaV4VBGkpi52OezgSA/s1600/IMG_2197.JPG"><img style="TEXT-ALIGN: center; MARGIN: 0px auto 10px; WIDTH: 320px; DISPLAY: block; HEIGHT: 188px; CURSOR: hand" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5631646145126185490" border="0" alt="" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgWv-lZXXECoK5pOlLxZsnam7ES2Wl9DUlY7ZbWG5cDw8XYPSVjgD7RauMSlYX4t8scZk7TXu6QXsD07eQAhgXmVKVGZjpkcGKS-smkeW5zo3pvcEGcVPRfm9UK9IaV4VBGkpi52OezgSA/s320/IMG_2197.JPG" /></a> When I posted all those houses from Eufaula, I did not have a photo of the kind of house I want to build one day. I like to translate that into someday. Funny, now that our house is full of things I love, I still can't stop that shopping habit for great old pieces. Often I think "I should keep that, it will look great in the someday house". Or, "I should buy that, it is such a great price and would look great in the someday house." I then rationalize and say to myself "I can find a place for it, cause one day is someday and someday is coming." For those of us who love the hunt, live for the find, and keep dreaming of the someday house, this all makes perfect sense. I do "trade up" as some folks say, buying the next better piece and saying goodbye to the item it replaced. It's a romance with decorating and perserving articles from the past. In that case, hum this old favorite "some day my house will come" to the tune of some day my prince will come. Until then, I'll just keep waiting for one day to become the someday that is yesterday. <br /><br /><br /><br /><br /><br /><br /><div></div></div></div></div>The Prim Colonialhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/12318341070204596629noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1400294791684446361.post-68031829108921853012011-07-17T20:35:00.003-05:002011-07-17T21:26:37.593-05:00A Prim Hunt<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiOhWL7fQDP3egO3Vsrr-6HdJPQFgib2em3FqwT-fpOzkMqpBYuzFqrdxoDXqe-lZOBfE7r4fKCCP6O3NfFDU48nhVfe4EixQm0sNA-9zJuA1ZcPnIT-fRD8e5WOJ8QwsU3vVlUTyZ7pyM/s1600/IMG_0077.JPG"><img style="MARGIN: 0px 0px 10px 10px; WIDTH: 240px; FLOAT: right; HEIGHT: 320px; CURSOR: hand" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5630501933345520098" border="0" alt="" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiOhWL7fQDP3egO3Vsrr-6HdJPQFgib2em3FqwT-fpOzkMqpBYuzFqrdxoDXqe-lZOBfE7r4fKCCP6O3NfFDU48nhVfe4EixQm0sNA-9zJuA1ZcPnIT-fRD8e5WOJ8QwsU3vVlUTyZ7pyM/s320/IMG_0077.JPG" /></a> A prim hunt is certainly something I look forward to. Sometimes they just happen, other times they are well planned adventures. Some hunts last for days while others can be a few minutes to a full day trip. I have no preference, though I will say I am a little partial to those journeys that last a few days. I will embark on a prim hunt whenever I am called to do so.<br />Such is the case from this past Friday. When attending the Spoon Sisters Auction in Tyrone, Georgia a few months ago, several items were purchased that did not fit in Rebecka's vehicle. Of course, we had to go back. I myself had purchased an item at a favorite stop along the way that needed to be picked up too. So we packed up the kids, some cucumber sandwiches, and a U-haul. Down the road we headed!<br />One must always be prepared for the hunt. Plenty of snacks and drinks are a must. A few magazines filled with prim ideas (A Primitive Place is crucial) and your "must find" list should be handy. A little notebook, pen and measuring tape are good to have for notes and measurements. A good night's sleep is not required, but does help if you are the driver! Pillows and blankets for the kids are a good idea in case you are much later returning than you planned. A fun dinner out is always a treat.<br />Our most recent journey began pretty early in the morning, as we were making a day trip to a location almost 6 hours from home. Arriving at the great prim shop of Spoon Sister's Tiques and Treasures, our plan was to load and go, with a short hunt around their shop. I scored BIG almost immediately, spotting this great firkin: $10 said the tag. Ripe for the picking! Never noticed the 20% sign in that booth....what a pleasant surprise! <br />Now, sometimes you have to be willing to leave the planned trail when you are prim hunting. Just such a deviation occurred as we met Miss Betty there at the shop , who told us there was plenty more good hunting in her garage and storage house just right around the corner. We followed our prim hunt guide to her house and got a tour of a wonderful home and goodie filled garage and storage house. Rebecka nabbed a fantastic iron and brass bed. <br /><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg2jA9OXKgVAJSNStBOgtvbrDHlULH5PghoWAgE5bn-aWM0n-dUMWbrRaF0ye234r61K97853hjfLX7Vm8Jz126x4L2sPUVqi5VLEiIyjaRuJW9MGU5fB_NqDN-xh1Yn6BdseOsonfoUPs/s1600/IMG_0075.JPG"><img style="MARGIN: 0px 0px 10px 10px; WIDTH: 240px; FLOAT: right; HEIGHT: 320px; CURSOR: hand" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5630501931221409842" border="0" alt="" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg2jA9OXKgVAJSNStBOgtvbrDHlULH5PghoWAgE5bn-aWM0n-dUMWbrRaF0ye234r61K97853hjfLX7Vm8Jz126x4L2sPUVqi5VLEiIyjaRuJW9MGU5fB_NqDN-xh1Yn6BdseOsonfoUPs/s320/IMG_0075.JPG" /></a><br /><br /><br /><br /><div><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh5Lr2PO5fCqJgAuegYmb7r0Wv8QEGQ7aNDzBQjgsXyD4iBOUJjQZ0o5vpEopnadoaP24yjWMwNLOla21xbughvKYZcjm0d_IusCQrtbkjTj-adiJUjwj1-yKzLbZVxfVW-D34y6lflgZI/s1600/IMG_0076.JPG"><img style="MARGIN: 0px 0px 10px 10px; WIDTH: 320px; FLOAT: right; HEIGHT: 240px; CURSOR: hand" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5630501057496665282" border="0" alt="" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh5Lr2PO5fCqJgAuegYmb7r0Wv8QEGQ7aNDzBQjgsXyD4iBOUJjQZ0o5vpEopnadoaP24yjWMwNLOla21xbughvKYZcjm0d_IusCQrtbkjTj-adiJUjwj1-yKzLbZVxfVW-D34y6lflgZI/s320/IMG_0076.JPG" /></a>Back on track and furniture loaded, we stopped at our two favorite shops along the route. There we both found some delightful goodies. The inlaid box (there I go again on the<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgCEEmxqN4t2-MUjz-0i_m5btLbO8mIGSIyw9lJPdBaS88tcSySkESZU0D7HACI_rl31pwiDhroPzzhqbh9hl3LVzE_wfHDkxGupmYZ80vUe9QkwFPfEXF7gIIiVPno_eT2VPBU5q3lhU8/s1600/DSCN3146_0241.jpg"></a> boxes) and the yelloware bowl were nice finds for me. The topiary (one of three!) was a treat, as it was a super price. Rebecka kept two and I kept one. Rebecka selected a few items too. We honestly bought very little on this trip <br /><div>but if laughter had a value, we'd be rich!</div><br /><div>I don't think you can judge the success of your prim hunt by the number of items you bag. Yes, we love to come home with lots of items to find homes for; that special place just waiting to house our find. We were very pleased with our smaller catch. To find a treasure or treasures you can bring home and place in your decor is, of course, the design of the hunt. Sometimes, the hunt is more about the fellowship of the hunters than the size of the catch. Sweet memories and a warm friendship are the greater treasures you can bring home and place in your heart. That's the best prim hunt find of all! ~~ Beth</div></div>The Prim Colonialhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/12318341070204596629noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1400294791684446361.post-472831148334130082011-07-12T20:14:00.005-05:002011-07-12T21:09:46.565-05:00Must Have a Porch<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhiDVQzHDY7it9MSu0ak42YE35gYs5ohNWE8-fkhYx81YKYi5v_yqwUDcM82SmYfEs5EQVP5J92t6Gw9O813uMNJWQWaV0skM6qV7FSr6xAj1ht0w84ArKYVHlW1UxVzOzXy0DMzaRU7JM/s1600/DSCN3171_0210.jpg"><img style="WIDTH: 320px; HEIGHT: 216px; CURSOR: hand" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5628652304921435378" border="0" alt="" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhiDVQzHDY7it9MSu0ak42YE35gYs5ohNWE8-fkhYx81YKYi5v_yqwUDcM82SmYfEs5EQVP5J92t6Gw9O813uMNJWQWaV0skM6qV7FSr6xAj1ht0w84ArKYVHlW1UxVzOzXy0DMzaRU7JM/s320/DSCN3171_0210.jpg" /></a> <a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgD-reLfnqlR14UXQo2kPJURL9y39tB4o84OmAF_b8Gd8nZiJA6msf2p6B1RpjC2sXJsMPj8wZuXcJmkOJ-SFEzOWVUiddBNR7Hp9aD80Izd6PG-2abqYtZjZf7Lwhm8eihM2DuMk7h5V4/s1600/DSCN3168_0208.jpg"><img style="WIDTH: 320px; HEIGHT: 216px; CURSOR: hand" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5628652294740026642" border="0" alt="" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgD-reLfnqlR14UXQo2kPJURL9y39tB4o84OmAF_b8Gd8nZiJA6msf2p6B1RpjC2sXJsMPj8wZuXcJmkOJ-SFEzOWVUiddBNR7Hp9aD80Izd6PG-2abqYtZjZf7Lwhm8eihM2DuMk7h5V4/s320/DSCN3168_0208.jpg" /></a><br /><br /><div><br /><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiebza2VkMSRx2h5VUWKKnEJBUDxLJxh54ZgM6ac-al1qvLdm20mwj-wlrVkKfRC7uhdv_3Yba-ADQNs2VD4IkziGDlpFGHjdQo5YeSMc2xRbQ74GkLpYKL_ELoVlTBICzmWvf9hpHzrFM/s1600/DSCN3183_0238.jpg"><img style="WIDTH: 216px; HEIGHT: 320px; CURSOR: hand" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5628650949610648978" border="0" alt="" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiebza2VkMSRx2h5VUWKKnEJBUDxLJxh54ZgM6ac-al1qvLdm20mwj-wlrVkKfRC7uhdv_3Yba-ADQNs2VD4IkziGDlpFGHjdQo5YeSMc2xRbQ74GkLpYKL_ELoVlTBICzmWvf9hpHzrFM/s320/DSCN3183_0238.jpg" /></a><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjFJgeANVsu4U3cBSz4sEmw-2fqadV7QnkK5b0Et_Th_OlwYcCX5mZRA7BsiNXshrllvny2Lrq51Czf5xQl940KZbPKxP-7gJJ07GQfZ3KCIVrsT7Rqk3GhDBT7EQDvR6_8UxSM4MSZG3s/s1600/DSCN3158_0178.jpg"><img style="WIDTH: 320px; HEIGHT: 216px; CURSOR: hand" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5628650955794723218" border="0" alt="" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjFJgeANVsu4U3cBSz4sEmw-2fqadV7QnkK5b0Et_Th_OlwYcCX5mZRA7BsiNXshrllvny2Lrq51Czf5xQl940KZbPKxP-7gJJ07GQfZ3KCIVrsT7Rqk3GhDBT7EQDvR6_8UxSM4MSZG3s/s320/DSCN3158_0178.jpg" /></a><br /><br /><div><br /><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgPijJO5DC7-AiOVrYZDP5k-1uQ4XOlBqB18zR6D3ZPgN_S3uKDaQr2T3ANNFC8SXb40TF5MiWtNg80wVtT60T2SpPW34Th8GLVjB9wdOSoIvXuTCY5p37EvJdklG8wASNcUmMGGmP48-M/s1600/DSCN3181_0235.jpg"><img style="WIDTH: 320px; HEIGHT: 216px; CURSOR: hand" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5628650934712573810" border="0" alt="" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgPijJO5DC7-AiOVrYZDP5k-1uQ4XOlBqB18zR6D3ZPgN_S3uKDaQr2T3ANNFC8SXb40TF5MiWtNg80wVtT60T2SpPW34Th8GLVjB9wdOSoIvXuTCY5p37EvJdklG8wASNcUmMGGmP48-M/s320/DSCN3181_0235.jpg" /></a><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhNsFckQbcOMxwYssOmy5MxouSqgygc5Vcdfr6_LvzGnvnfwW6Gg7L-qj3T1CHxZpSgRvnnBvWxRhNd2uX7QPKh0y-UH4q2RHuj1eVh4jzcOGCwCNl-wEpiZSJSTGVMMnbaM-Mwlh-kj-k/s1600/DSCN3174_0224.jpg"><img style="WIDTH: 320px; HEIGHT: 216px; CURSOR: hand" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5628650928389266178" border="0" alt="" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhNsFckQbcOMxwYssOmy5MxouSqgygc5Vcdfr6_LvzGnvnfwW6Gg7L-qj3T1CHxZpSgRvnnBvWxRhNd2uX7QPKh0y-UH4q2RHuj1eVh4jzcOGCwCNl-wEpiZSJSTGVMMnbaM-Mwlh-kj-k/s320/DSCN3174_0224.jpg" /></a><br /><br /><div><br /><div><br /><div><br /><div><br /><div></div><br /><div>I am not sure when my interest in old homes began. Was I born with it? My hometown in SC, where I lived until I was about six, has many beautiful old homes that still cause me to catch my breath. Did I develop it from the times I played in some of those old homes? Did it happen like a habit, repetitive exposure to historic homes? Living in Savannah, Ga. at one time in my childhood probably contributed to this interest of mine. Having lived in a historic city in Florida for the rest of my years thus far generated some additional exposure as well. Is that the reason I enjoy old homes so much? </div><br /><div>For as long as I can remember, my grandparents loved to take that Sunday drive ( it did not always have to be on a Sunday.). We would often "go to ride" and look at houses and yards and who knows what else. My grandparents built their home in the 1930's and was for the most part a more modernized home for the many years I enjoyed it. In your sock feet you could get a running start in the kitchen and then slide down the hall. The black and white patterned tile in the bathroom could mesmerize a sleepy child. The long kitchen sink was a place I knew well, standing by my grandmother (on a chair when I was a little girl ) and drying dishes as she washed them. Just across the back yard, I could go play at the Hoover home when their grandchildren visited. Their house boasted a large stairwell in the center hall, a grande hall for sure. Lots of bedrooms upstairs (at least it seemed that way) were the perfect spots for hide and seek. Most of all, Mrs. Hoover had a big trunk filled with "old clothes" that we could dress up in. As I think back on those tossed over clothes I realize they would make a vintage and historic clothes hound's heart stop! Next door was the Kirkley home. Mr. Kirkley owned the 5 & 10 ( I promise I am not THAT OLD but that is what they called it.) and Mrs. Kirkley was as southern as they come. They had "help" so my grandmother would say. When their granddaughters came to visit we enjoyed a few tea parties and "sampled" in the kitchen whatever Margaret was making! Spending time in those homes, and a few others in town, gave me an early experience of the warmth and beauty those old walls created in the sense of home and memories. </div><br /><div>It stands to reason that a few pictures on the walls in my den are of homes in Colonial Williamsburg that caught my eye when visiting. I asked if, since I was related, could I overnight in the George Wythe house. The odd look I received lead me to believe that was not an option. Everywhere I have lived as I grew up has had a historic district that included some lovely homes. I can't avoid it on vacation either: there is nothing more lovely than viewing the houses on St. Charles in New Orleans, taking a walking tour in Madison, Georgia, or even including a trip to a sugar cane plantation on a Caribbean island. Old homes not only speak to me, they call me by name! </div><br /><div>Olivia hears them too. We often play a game when visiting an area with these old homes. We call out "that's my house" as we pass one we love. This is often said many times during one of our "drive-bys". We marvel at the different style periods, the colors people use, the front doors, the porches. Oh, the porches! </div><br /><div>For us southern gals, it must have a porch. Not just a little porch, but one that stretches the width of the house. If it wraps around, all the better. Room for a swing, some ferns, some wicker chairs perhaps or wooden rockers. Room enough to roller skate on rainy days. High enough to jump off of with dignity. Space for a jogglin board.....if you could find someone to make you one! Steps out front to sit on and sip lemonade, eat a popsicle, or just watch the world go by. Yes, it must have a porch. </div><br /><div>So am I just a gal with an addiction? Is my love for old architecture a genetic disorder or result of over exposure? Did the experience of creating marvelous memories in the houses on Market Street create a love affair for the past to be prevalent in my present? I'm not really sure. I don't believe in reincarnation, but if I did, I would believe I lived in a grand old southern home! You know it had a porch. ~ Beth </div><br /><br /><div><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhsjeOz2p8HnDYAXRjG7MPWafxnau2nRrxzi3cxjHsmburYSuSkIhR2q-pfu6s7RIIuMWAJu3hHy18F_AxrSXX_NEH6Fy4MSnKdeS8WDdCBFKwhneH0-si3vm6FRDeKRMPQxRvbHaJpFNw/s1600/DSCN3161_0182.jpg"><img style="WIDTH: 320px; HEIGHT: 216px; CURSOR: hand" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5628640042717499010" border="0" alt="" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhsjeOz2p8HnDYAXRjG7MPWafxnau2nRrxzi3cxjHsmburYSuSkIhR2q-pfu6s7RIIuMWAJu3hHy18F_AxrSXX_NEH6Fy4MSnKdeS8WDdCBFKwhneH0-si3vm6FRDeKRMPQxRvbHaJpFNw/s320/DSCN3161_0182.jpg" /></a> <a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhEw_Ab0BwBUi-19idpyNSgjdrwT33M-pJeZDnBwk01QaE4AF8J8FRgwRNagWyoxkCMpyUFFoXrOpg5al_E9772gZTkiPpraeRhIQPMPCU1zWgee5La_e3G5yQ0AYm8boQeuSzeg2lNyi0/s1600/DSCN3163_0185.jpg"><img style="WIDTH: 216px; HEIGHT: 320px; CURSOR: hand" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5628640025560855666" border="0" alt="" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhEw_Ab0BwBUi-19idpyNSgjdrwT33M-pJeZDnBwk01QaE4AF8J8FRgwRNagWyoxkCMpyUFFoXrOpg5al_E9772gZTkiPpraeRhIQPMPCU1zWgee5La_e3G5yQ0AYm8boQeuSzeg2lNyi0/s320/DSCN3163_0185.jpg" /></a><br /><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgwpkz5BLrjRoeIT3FdO-syroXL__YwqnBz56gH37dIeQ_PUneWJRb-5qVCA7QUDbAPY0gihyphenhyphenvpuzMdmGA1o2XMNbPN3dov9pttL0zV3wmB1_RZIc98JeYzXTYZS5ZAwbDwImchJzME7CE/s1600/DSCN3164_0186.jpg"><img style="WIDTH: 320px; HEIGHT: 216px; CURSOR: hand" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5628640038184484274" border="0" alt="" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgwpkz5BLrjRoeIT3FdO-syroXL__YwqnBz56gH37dIeQ_PUneWJRb-5qVCA7QUDbAPY0gihyphenhyphenvpuzMdmGA1o2XMNbPN3dov9pttL0zV3wmB1_RZIc98JeYzXTYZS5ZAwbDwImchJzME7CE/s320/DSCN3164_0186.jpg" /></a><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg6Of_LL7YUxFnyBPc0ohIUuwnkNZgH1DFieHjyWAmguAJPInGkDMRCy3pzslxI6gsqODuM5JBmi9GgB13rHXmamvmC9wunj_wJ8FERXncSu-mzDMjY-XGcRxRkJ8WOMsken0J-sYbCIwQ/s1600/DSCN3122_0217.jpg"><img style="WIDTH: 320px; HEIGHT: 216px; CURSOR: hand" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5628640017411742514" border="0" alt="" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg6Of_LL7YUxFnyBPc0ohIUuwnkNZgH1DFieHjyWAmguAJPInGkDMRCy3pzslxI6gsqODuM5JBmi9GgB13rHXmamvmC9wunj_wJ8FERXncSu-mzDMjY-XGcRxRkJ8WOMsken0J-sYbCIwQ/s320/DSCN3122_0217.jpg" /></a><br /><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh-uGlKx02jSjm6IrDbKDQg2OI8VKwZpqAuHE88QSIZ2U7VDJ08YAh1Qypf-ozZAJfcvg4DPJEWUNFclc1RPEyiCWJ_1iogZRrvyvKOV7Se2HqGueOKfhRK6yktaIxXXRcQjnL14Xn8y_8/s1600/DSCN3160_0181.jpg"><img style="WIDTH: 320px; HEIGHT: 216px; CURSOR: hand" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5628640023339159730" border="0" alt="" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh-uGlKx02jSjm6IrDbKDQg2OI8VKwZpqAuHE88QSIZ2U7VDJ08YAh1Qypf-ozZAJfcvg4DPJEWUNFclc1RPEyiCWJ_1iogZRrvyvKOV7Se2HqGueOKfhRK6yktaIxXXRcQjnL14Xn8y_8/s320/DSCN3160_0181.jpg" /></a> These homes were photographed by my plundering partner and sweet daughter, Olivia, in Eufaula, Ala. </div></div></div></div></div></div></div>The Prim Colonialhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/12318341070204596629noreply@blogger.com4tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1400294791684446361.post-40039914987088876102011-07-10T21:47:00.004-05:002011-07-10T22:56:41.178-05:00My Plundering Partner<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiBaigvwYK6UK5U0fCMI8iG5kIFhQAMTwRMmhGjznMKl6TP9Mpn1XwSGNnIw0dNGQ9sGgKhQ3YpEgQL9fw31qOC1VGtvpj6uFH9xRLiu1FfstyUdBpduUPKHGD-oj5RUskUmeSzWgj3yKI/s1600/DSCN3227.JPG"><img style="MARGIN: 0px 10px 10px 0px; WIDTH: 240px; FLOAT: left; HEIGHT: 320px; CURSOR: hand" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5627923780822512178" border="0" alt="" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiBaigvwYK6UK5U0fCMI8iG5kIFhQAMTwRMmhGjznMKl6TP9Mpn1XwSGNnIw0dNGQ9sGgKhQ3YpEgQL9fw31qOC1VGtvpj6uFH9xRLiu1FfstyUdBpduUPKHGD-oj5RUskUmeSzWgj3yKI/s320/DSCN3227.JPG" /></a>Mothers and daughters are quite a combination. I count myself lucky to have two wonderful daughters. Though the teen years can be tough for a variety of reasons, I believe that with some tender loving care, you are just adding rich patina to your lives, much like the antiques and <span id="SPELLING_ERROR_0" class="blsp-spelling-error">prims</span> we enjoy so much. <br /><div><br /><div>Both my girls seem to understand and appreciate my love of timeworn antiques and the treasure hunt I so enjoy. She has been on several of those road trips that involved stopping at many flea markets and antique stores. When she was little, I would show her some items in a Country Living or Country Sampler magazine and challenge her to find them wherever we were. Now, she just takes her camera along and looks for the art in the aisles of furniture and the rows of booths. </div><br /><div>Her interest has also grown to my blog; making suggestions about items we should photograph for it, or commenting on things I should mention when writing. Her eye for the old meant we spent some time last weekend taking photos of great old homes in <span id="SPELLING_ERROR_1" class="blsp-spelling-error">Eufaula</span>, Alabama. It is a beautiful town that boasts some gorgeous old houses and churches. I plan to do a post on them very soon as Olivia told me they would be "great for the blog". An old barn and abandoned general store on an old county road became the perfect place for portrait photography. The photographer handed the camera to me and she became the subject. </div><br /><div>Our journeys, often accompanied by Rebecka and her daughter Madison, are the things legends are made of. The laughs we've had, the crazy sights we've seen (we make a list of these on each trip we take), and the people we have met along the way are memories we can share forever. She often remarks where an item came from or the trip it was associated with when she takes note of something in our home. She and Madison have hilarious stories to tell about their "crazy mothers" and they know that their dads could never understand what this whole thing is about!</div><br /><div>Sweet Sixteen is rapidly approaching for my plundering partner. It's hard to believe that the little girl in the photo on our entry table (oval frame in the picture) has grown up so quickly. I am thankful that, no matter her age, we can always hit the road together and hunt for the next great find. One thing I am sure we'll always find is the special friendship that a mother and daughter share. I am pretty sure that is the greatest find of all. ~~ Beth</div></div>The Prim Colonialhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/12318341070204596629noreply@blogger.com3tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1400294791684446361.post-54503397190747743362011-06-21T19:19:00.012-05:002011-06-21T19:58:38.578-05:00Places Everyone!First, let me say how much I appreciate all of you that have become followers and those of you that comment as well. I hope I always leave you with some food for thought about our prim/colonial attraction, good ideas I have surely copied and photos that you enjoy looking at. I'm going to step my writing up a notch in July (or so I think!). Today though I am sharing some "spots" that received new items in my home. When I get back from one of our adventures, I am always excited to find that spot for the things I purchased. Sometimes I know immediately where they will go and other times not....sometimes it means parting with a treasure from before and other times it just means "make room!" I really had a nice gathering of treasures a few weekends ago. I was mainly looking for old books, but found none....most of what I purchased was not on my "need to find" list. None the less, I loved my goodies and found homes for them. I took some photos of a few of them to share now, some to share later. So, without further adieu: Places Everyone!<br />The little red box with the nicely curved front received a little sanding and some stain over the red paint, giving it a much older appearance. It was on my "list to find" so that the fire place lighter had a place to hide. My mantle is a work in progress right now, so the box is off center. Need your ideas and inspiration to finish out the mantle. Love the painting of my sweet Olivia, still deciding if I need to frame it...any thoughts? Place the pewter cup next to it for now.<br /><br /><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh95aQzjzGjXgN_9R6gJYiEV4Ufplc1pTf6_sD6MujFsCdePEGp6owH93MjWYUKPmHsPXevNUU5lTLtF2fngFf2xdNhs9hBV8RCK8r9-Zqntt3mmfwkCGMcIdrfJJKHrmPd5TwKA_46n3o/s1600/IMG_0052.JPG"><img style="MARGIN: 0px 10px 10px 0px; WIDTH: 320px; FLOAT: left; HEIGHT: 240px; CURSOR: hand" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5620834657007248226" border="0" alt="" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh95aQzjzGjXgN_9R6gJYiEV4Ufplc1pTf6_sD6MujFsCdePEGp6owH93MjWYUKPmHsPXevNUU5lTLtF2fngFf2xdNhs9hBV8RCK8r9-Zqntt3mmfwkCGMcIdrfJJKHrmPd5TwKA_46n3o/s320/IMG_0052.JPG" /></a><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiVh37A8YxQ8uVKO1_iuKp4CZtsGF0h-O4jZK3iF4s69T627nMhxVKEX28a4iRFCeulxey0XZErtENw4m3rsBQOEvPDGZ6ch5yx_80enQH8bMk1Z-8ySeW2tb2tfyCJ0jq4Wp5L8Se9QQ4/s1600/IMG_0050.JPG"><img style="MARGIN: 0px 10px 10px 0px; WIDTH: 240px; FLOAT: left; HEIGHT: 320px; CURSOR: hand" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5620834673215325458" border="0" alt="" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiVh37A8YxQ8uVKO1_iuKp4CZtsGF0h-O4jZK3iF4s69T627nMhxVKEX28a4iRFCeulxey0XZErtENw4m3rsBQOEvPDGZ6ch5yx_80enQH8bMk1Z-8ySeW2tb2tfyCJ0jq4Wp5L8Se9QQ4/s320/IMG_0050.JPG" /></a><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjnNazBPX3bPRVkNTXxKnuakGC2SHvJfP9FDPmv6QqDbNr2ODKHNrGqYrrH4da6HXPm5K05IVntg1P9at7Ev4dIPeB3Uqdn3zpeUvzMR7U5xRNcGtAW9AMOZjb6-6DuKqWenGFc7McWRck/s1600/IMG_0051.JPG"><img style="MARGIN: 0px 10px 10px 0px; WIDTH: 240px; FLOAT: left; HEIGHT: 320px; CURSOR: hand" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5620834648226370434" border="0" alt="" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjnNazBPX3bPRVkNTXxKnuakGC2SHvJfP9FDPmv6QqDbNr2ODKHNrGqYrrH4da6HXPm5K05IVntg1P9at7Ev4dIPeB3Uqdn3zpeUvzMR7U5xRNcGtAW9AMOZjb6-6DuKqWenGFc7McWRck/s320/IMG_0051.JPG" /></a><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjRXgA1Z0ZLZs3if8KPukEkUuXgfLFYQdWCr-Jx7w82a_poFkPVxnOOka8oD544ieTs20GW4xJu4NxxVqr4q4y8XlR8pAq4s0Od8D7hNXNVZCWNiXE2MDYBpmCLSPoufRR3gJDNgJig0sE/s1600/IMG_0014.JPG"><img style="MARGIN: 0px 10px 10px 0px; WIDTH: 320px; FLOAT: left; HEIGHT: 240px; CURSOR: hand" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5620834663496257250" border="0" alt="" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjRXgA1Z0ZLZs3if8KPukEkUuXgfLFYQdWCr-Jx7w82a_poFkPVxnOOka8oD544ieTs20GW4xJu4NxxVqr4q4y8XlR8pAq4s0Od8D7hNXNVZCWNiXE2MDYBpmCLSPoufRR3gJDNgJig0sE/s320/IMG_0014.JPG" /></a>Previous post revealed the make over on the firkin, the old "crate box" and the wonderful grain box all teamed up in the laundry room. The large square document box found it's way to an end table in the den....placed it underneath the smaller box I had there. Not sure if this will be the final "spot" for this beauty. Greenery from Spoon Sister's Tiques and Treasures nestled in on the kitchen table for some summer foilage display. Should have bought loads more of those, they are so sweet and delicate. Rebecka and I often call our trips by the items we bought. The Pie Safe trip is one tale. The Book trip is another. For me, this was The Box trip. I only needed one...but came home with four. Five if you count the one that ended up in Olivia's bathroom for a trash can. Wouldn't you agree there is a great joy in the hunt? And only your prim friend can understand the grin of satisfaction, the squeal of delight and the hug you give the item. ( Please tell me other people do that!) Our drive home is often a converstation of placement of items, favorite item found, best deal of the day, and the regret item ( the one you left behind for whatever reason that seemed reasonable at the time but now seems like utter nonsense!) Typically, one attempts to resound the reasonable reason to make it seem reasonable again, but, tragically fails to do so! So you might ask, my regret on the last trip? Letting a great old blanket box get away at the auction. My favorite item was the grain box. Best deal? The grain box! Lastly, placement has been revealed here with the hopes it meets your approval. After all, you are my inspiration at The Prim Colonial. ~~ BethThe Prim Colonialhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/12318341070204596629noreply@blogger.com3tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1400294791684446361.post-73730964180837569992011-06-16T07:15:00.005-05:002011-06-16T07:32:23.739-05:00Whatcha workin' on?<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjHrAj2b4PLOsCvN74zqYy2vik3l6VDmZZ691YRLHOx7pKpKC5MfIubCdDGUc6IzFqbL-6T1B4oh_lgcd7yjMV5f5kj1cwPPufcF_6KEyDCBqyJqGqZQKAR8cebpGsE5ngLxSD0PGwrh_Q/s1600/IMG_0044.JPG"><img style="MARGIN: 0px 0px 10px 10px; WIDTH: 240px; FLOAT: right; HEIGHT: 320px; CURSOR: hand" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5618793656335351234" border="0" alt="" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjHrAj2b4PLOsCvN74zqYy2vik3l6VDmZZ691YRLHOx7pKpKC5MfIubCdDGUc6IzFqbL-6T1B4oh_lgcd7yjMV5f5kj1cwPPufcF_6KEyDCBqyJqGqZQKAR8cebpGsE5ngLxSD0PGwrh_Q/s320/IMG_0044.JPG" /></a><br /><br /><div><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhQxMGgCpo1VVGzIS0RpziZll9M-AaAakKyTvjLBXKHHKBU2zfkoJjyH2kujAnu3-LjE7_QO9UuOcSGC-e5ejn56ClSCB3cXzC57kET706p4vfDuxCqLepNLoXHEjB5xKi8KSuGc3tIjhc/s1600/IMG_0034.JPG"><img style="MARGIN: 0px 0px 10px 10px; WIDTH: 240px; FLOAT: right; HEIGHT: 320px; CURSOR: hand" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5618793649825217122" border="0" alt="" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhQxMGgCpo1VVGzIS0RpziZll9M-AaAakKyTvjLBXKHHKBU2zfkoJjyH2kujAnu3-LjE7_QO9UuOcSGC-e5ejn56ClSCB3cXzC57kET706p4vfDuxCqLepNLoXHEjB5xKi8KSuGc3tIjhc/s320/IMG_0034.JPG" /></a><br /><br /><br /><br /><div><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjhbwakmM22sdKO4HBt9QdVhZrmcWhBCVF4YXUkM7naWpFR7iZEPxhV0XOix6aGbfzwfvByhogLNbLkqJ_f2VEcyK6puCzfb71h7LE6fyfGQFqkGY5mce8io4ThfaxZfPiWgbjXJIR3jnA/s1600/IMG_0038.JPG"><img style="WIDTH: 240px; HEIGHT: 320px; CURSOR: hand" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5618793232970936978" border="0" alt="" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjhbwakmM22sdKO4HBt9QdVhZrmcWhBCVF4YXUkM7naWpFR7iZEPxhV0XOix6aGbfzwfvByhogLNbLkqJ_f2VEcyK6puCzfb71h7LE6fyfGQFqkGY5mce8io4ThfaxZfPiWgbjXJIR3jnA/s320/IMG_0038.JPG" /></a> <a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjxOuI5gaDVtPHZu5nfS99-f5q-TS-s9eIhBN8zx8AATIQhcILqUyD5rWyGhFEacdhvhRZQWaCO5nf5NnIHHBX-AdU86kOu4trJUGUEJXBjBx-VyND7M05tguAiuwteVekDlgOwWjt6boA/s1600/IMG_0046.JPG"><img style="WIDTH: 240px; HEIGHT: 320px; CURSOR: hand" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5618793216811224130" border="0" alt="" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjxOuI5gaDVtPHZu5nfS99-f5q-TS-s9eIhBN8zx8AATIQhcILqUyD5rWyGhFEacdhvhRZQWaCO5nf5NnIHHBX-AdU86kOu4trJUGUEJXBjBx-VyND7M05tguAiuwteVekDlgOwWjt6boA/s320/IMG_0046.JPG" /></a><br /><br /><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhvKXkE9twu3-giGTn5hqTbC9kRyQvJ-XFxPeYvJ4Jba2S9-eIPXSSbgNzqt2peGJvEEKAuAq3Qzf-erlSppff_3doJLB7tdJWxXj702MH51sd4ac3d-CSBoj_tUAehoCEV6wmZS_oley8/s1600/IMG_0027.JPG"><img style="WIDTH: 240px; HEIGHT: 320px; CURSOR: hand" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5618793213835945666" border="0" alt="" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhvKXkE9twu3-giGTn5hqTbC9kRyQvJ-XFxPeYvJ4Jba2S9-eIPXSSbgNzqt2peGJvEEKAuAq3Qzf-erlSppff_3doJLB7tdJWxXj702MH51sd4ac3d-CSBoj_tUAehoCEV6wmZS_oley8/s320/IMG_0027.JPG" /></a><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgZ1NydKPgQGUde0-TyKoRTWDF0S47o7v4NRMtkD5F4B5dJvyjsViD42n432_jYzeOlZ8r_6QO5UUPObJqzS5QpANwFEKECl04pgccZCs2OCrQdKv2url0L71mI2WPgoHTVNTZpzKunFlU/s1600/IMG_0039.JPG"><img style="WIDTH: 240px; HEIGHT: 320px; CURSOR: hand" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5618793220501329714" border="0" alt="" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgZ1NydKPgQGUde0-TyKoRTWDF0S47o7v4NRMtkD5F4B5dJvyjsViD42n432_jYzeOlZ8r_6QO5UUPObJqzS5QpANwFEKECl04pgccZCs2OCrQdKv2url0L71mI2WPgoHTVNTZpzKunFlU/s320/IMG_0039.JPG" /></a><br /><br /><div><br /><div><br /><div><br /><div>I can never imagine my home "done", there is still that dream home to build with the walk in pantry and a six foot table to find for that kitchen. In the meantime, there is still the regular upkeep and tweaking to do here....and I always seem to find a piece I love and have to have, not knowing where in the world it will go or what piece I will have to part with to make room ( I know I should never say such things!). I am wondering what you all are working on; what room or concept or prim-over. I love watching those transformations that many of you have shared. Currently I am painting, a little along all the while. Doors badly needed it, so they have been my target of late. Most of all, I have been working on a change in the prim scenery in Olivia's bathroom. I have added a few work in progress photos for you. I bought this wonderful bucket bench after I had painted her bathroom and that set off a whole new direction in the prim accessories there. So, I keep tweaking there right now. When it is all done, I will share again! I continue to be inspired by your beautiful posts and they keep me on the road to completion with each new idea or vignette you share. Many thanks for being my daily dose of prim decor addiction! Now you know what I will be up to this weekend! ~~ Beth </div></div></div></div></div></div>The Prim Colonialhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/12318341070204596629noreply@blogger.com3tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1400294791684446361.post-73901865777170403442011-06-15T22:16:00.004-05:002011-06-15T22:41:19.346-05:00A Prim-Over for a Firkin.<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhPq_EaFd_pqmZ58ACpkmv4WfqS_oDms-Nl7FdTRU3z8n5pPNCJMMnJWS6ZmYLk4LGxMd7JRjrT7isYU10a8PFHDlqJek8uMm33w0uBpqN5vkoG94P3w0HprjysaMe0cSBdWTlStJjn_WU/s1600/IMG_0013.JPG"><img style="MARGIN: 0px 0px 10px 10px; WIDTH: 320px; FLOAT: right; HEIGHT: 240px; CURSOR: hand" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5618653272599073234" border="0" alt="" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhPq_EaFd_pqmZ58ACpkmv4WfqS_oDms-Nl7FdTRU3z8n5pPNCJMMnJWS6ZmYLk4LGxMd7JRjrT7isYU10a8PFHDlqJek8uMm33w0uBpqN5vkoG94P3w0HprjysaMe0cSBdWTlStJjn_WU/s320/IMG_0013.JPG" /></a><br /><br /><div>You might remember from a previous post a little firkin that I purchased. Someone had painted it a weird brown color with gold trim and topped with a decal. Since it was much less than all the other firkins I had seen that weekend I decided it should go home with me and I would strip it. Mind you, I really don't like to strip things...I am not patient enough and often, after all the work, you discover that the wood underneath is just not that great. In this case, I figured it would be a case of just paint over it and prim it in that fashion if stripping fails to impress. So, I got to work and found a layer of yellow paint and then a layer of blue paint underneath. Nice copper tacks too! Once down to the wood, I was pretty pleased. I did not get it stripped completely, left some of the paint for a nice prim look. I added some stain and found a new home for the firkin. <em>What do you think about how it turned out?</em> I think my prim-over came out just prim perfect! <br /><br /><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEimoTImqLdDI0BEv6AYhqUjazBMrc2yWDPsIjJDp2RNc6FUsXu6xXXTKJfUQ9zHTn1e5rYq7nlZnwf4GwE2MkjaW02XeOa-XGG9or8MkHLNFPlWYLjph2oBHdZonvUdJptimKiA3beaCyo/s1600/IMG_0050.JPG"><img style="MARGIN: 0px 0px 10px 10px; WIDTH: 240px; FLOAT: right; HEIGHT: 320px; CURSOR: hand" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5618653290326091122" border="0" alt="" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEimoTImqLdDI0BEv6AYhqUjazBMrc2yWDPsIjJDp2RNc6FUsXu6xXXTKJfUQ9zHTn1e5rYq7nlZnwf4GwE2MkjaW02XeOa-XGG9or8MkHLNFPlWYLjph2oBHdZonvUdJptimKiA3beaCyo/s320/IMG_0050.JPG" /></a><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiJTnAfEgcrgGgBUSoW0HZ4sVtoirvfRSIdAoDz4KeBUgnkvz0vFh7HQJ-1OCwzBXWCLEt7WWObxzCXIFWNCXl5PI1vw2OJhyaLLatpLi7dxwcOghfQwi7wUAjTuIOTwqLyktn2LVv4NRc/s1600/IMG_0049.JPG"><img style="MARGIN: 0px 0px 10px 10px; WIDTH: 240px; FLOAT: right; HEIGHT: 320px; CURSOR: hand" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5618653289656635234" border="0" alt="" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiJTnAfEgcrgGgBUSoW0HZ4sVtoirvfRSIdAoDz4KeBUgnkvz0vFh7HQJ-1OCwzBXWCLEt7WWObxzCXIFWNCXl5PI1vw2OJhyaLLatpLi7dxwcOghfQwi7wUAjTuIOTwqLyktn2LVv4NRc/s320/IMG_0049.JPG" /></a><br /><br /><br /><br /><div><br /><div><br /><div><br /><br /><br /><br /><br /><br /><br /><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhcReVaxPNmTpI_UqJDbdFFynMKoFaLVuZBdH4p7lYRYJO5QB-nvwrhwdigcVqntEmy8DrHKbhpCkRkzRqkwq-oXMMpj_tfS_tvLN5QAwBHPcdKLzXM2-ybDKAZrZIbBkdFEmbqfy4kwzY/s1600/IMG_0048.JPG"><img style="MARGIN: 0px 0px 10px 10px; WIDTH: 240px; FLOAT: right; HEIGHT: 320px; CURSOR: hand" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5618653278668644466" border="0" alt="" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhcReVaxPNmTpI_UqJDbdFFynMKoFaLVuZBdH4p7lYRYJO5QB-nvwrhwdigcVqntEmy8DrHKbhpCkRkzRqkwq-oXMMpj_tfS_tvLN5QAwBHPcdKLzXM2-ybDKAZrZIbBkdFEmbqfy4kwzY/s320/IMG_0048.JPG" /></a>And, I completely forgot to mention that I picked up this lovely grain bin on our little outing too! I am loving the patina on this box and all the "stains" on the top. I bought it as the man placed it in his booth. I did not buy it, but it caught my eye...want to know why? Well, because it was a make do for sure: an opened can of spam, painted black, rickrack added to the edges and some tolepainted strawberries added. Notice how the spam tab acts as the hanger for this little jewel. :)</div><br /><div>Now that is ingenuity at its finest! </div></div></div></div>The Prim Colonialhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/12318341070204596629noreply@blogger.com4tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1400294791684446361.post-18611593836119605142011-06-12T08:47:00.004-05:002011-06-12T19:55:07.977-05:00Traveling SwapTwo little kittes came to live at my house courtesy of the swap I participated in! <a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhLA-3oo6dUUL2L2P8YExDfobeF0T0vGnyJuGbpHuD4VmfA8V0fPG7m1jr56hC23YPB6-UdZ0TA8BnbNpoHPvsA4LYLyeY_zzKF8AKFRKLUdqcFdbqA4IBijD5QoLkV3M5Fc0e9i9ymr_0/s1600/IMG_0041.JPG"><img style="MARGIN: 0px 0px 10px 10px; WIDTH: 320px; FLOAT: right; HEIGHT: 240px; CURSOR: hand" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5617501016310691730" border="0" alt="" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhLA-3oo6dUUL2L2P8YExDfobeF0T0vGnyJuGbpHuD4VmfA8V0fPG7m1jr56hC23YPB6-UdZ0TA8BnbNpoHPvsA4LYLyeY_zzKF8AKFRKLUdqcFdbqA4IBijD5QoLkV3M5Fc0e9i9ymr_0/s320/IMG_0041.JPG" /></a> Some of the goodies I received!<br /><br /><div><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgLNpyajTNEH7NtBPYPT_5ClwJAfxiWYg2au0iQCW_KSGPOELWcjZ0RHz-vNyojX3JBfr06kHHMHn9K0ln_deAe5IKDzgZ2lYZSDk2vwkgH4IeH9LSte6Hup6gau3qPUZ3sOjb_yqTjd5A/s1600/IMG_0022.JPG"><img style="MARGIN: 0px 0px 10px 10px; WIDTH: 320px; FLOAT: right; HEIGHT: 240px; CURSOR: hand" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5617501008434029442" border="0" alt="" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgLNpyajTNEH7NtBPYPT_5ClwJAfxiWYg2au0iQCW_KSGPOELWcjZ0RHz-vNyojX3JBfr06kHHMHn9K0ln_deAe5IKDzgZ2lYZSDk2vwkgH4IeH9LSte6Hup6gau3qPUZ3sOjb_yqTjd5A/s320/IMG_0022.JPG" /></a><br /><br /><br /><br /><div>Two prim candles that smelled good enough to eat have found their home in my pewter sconces. <a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEji7GFNBGr3h8APkMhysKAQtXgg7Iz3XJMQ-9kBW1BuwkJ7AQ739TMohOob72t-zEtD3zsBbTquhVEgAeNgryaBggwQFLx0rTpL118bmUJGeJ0YvUrFnJ9r4jYG7tbYX9e5CBtj4Pm1Xak/s1600/IMG_0015.JPG"><img style="MARGIN: 0px 0px 10px 10px; WIDTH: 240px; FLOAT: right; HEIGHT: 320px; CURSOR: hand" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5617501005952643138" border="0" alt="" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEji7GFNBGr3h8APkMhysKAQtXgg7Iz3XJMQ-9kBW1BuwkJ7AQ739TMohOob72t-zEtD3zsBbTquhVEgAeNgryaBggwQFLx0rTpL118bmUJGeJ0YvUrFnJ9r4jYG7tbYX9e5CBtj4Pm1Xak/s320/IMG_0015.JPG" /></a><br /><br /><div>What a treat to see that wonderful box arrive! The Sisterhood of the Traveling Swap box arrived at my home...a little tattered from it's travels so far, but certainly still tough and concealing its contents well! Sweet Mary from <a href="http://marmmiesmammysandmore.blogspot.com/">http://marmmiesmammysandmore.blogspot.com/</a> sent the box on to me. She has a terrific blog that I enjoy, so I was pretty excited to see what all was in that box! Olivia wanted to help me open it and see what I had to choose from. We sat on the floor in the middle of my little home office and we opened the box revealing 5 wrapped goodies. The aroma from that box was yummy...cinnamon and coffee smells filled the room. I let Olivia choose the first item to unwrap. Once we were done unwrapping, we knew it would be so difficult to choose less than 5! Olivia promptly advised me to keep them ALL! I laughed and said "I can't do that, I am not a crafter and the next person on the list deserves some hand crafted items too. I will have to choose wisely, add a few of my collected treasures and send it on to the next person." We debated, discussed, carried things around the house to see if there was that special spot. I signed the inside bottom of the box, removed a cat that had decided it was a great place to sleep, made my selections and added my goodies to the box. Olivia had carefully wrapped all the goodies again for the next recipient, Mary G. I had to leave some of those beautifully crafted items in the box, though I wanted to keep every one. </div><br /><div>Mary at Marmmies is very talented and her items were perfectly prim! I left some in there for you Mary G. as I could not be selfish and keep all those handmade items for myself. Many thanks to Deb T. over at Crows Creek Primitives (another outstanding blog!) who started the swap. What a fun idea, like Christmas in June! I would love to do it again! I am enjoying my Sisterhood Swap items and will remember them as my first ever swap goodies! </div></div></div>The Prim Colonialhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/12318341070204596629noreply@blogger.com4tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1400294791684446361.post-65045466509579678812011-06-06T20:36:00.005-05:002011-06-07T20:45:48.180-05:00Life in the Laugh LaneOff on an adventure with my friend Rebecka is always a treat. You may remember me mentioning two wonderful women we met at an antique mall a while ago. They had a "to die for" booth filled with all the things w<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh1iixCNwexPD6R8nvTTVAlnSEuazAiHKQUii2GTOMIdheVgAbzh135aST-e3OKsRAzDsLxZxwrR3OZ4WiFRj7W0prYbKfDtA2jGwbuNa-8WAEVfkTiwLSpej9kWKesafBGG1pFygNEafk/s1600/IMG_0013.JPG"><img style="MARGIN: 0px 10px 10px 0px; WIDTH: 320px; FLOAT: left; HEIGHT: 240px; CURSOR: hand" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5615618278643189986" border="0" alt="" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh1iixCNwexPD6R8nvTTVAlnSEuazAiHKQUii2GTOMIdheVgAbzh135aST-e3OKsRAzDsLxZxwrR3OZ4WiFRj7W0prYbKfDtA2jGwbuNa-8WAEVfkTiwLSpej9kWKesafBGG1pFygNEafk/s320/IMG_0013.JPG" /></a>e love and were so much fun to chat with. We stayed in touch and saw them a few times again when we were back through the area. They held a barn sale that we attended also. We were delighted when they told us they would be holding their first auction! Of course we had to go support The Spoon Sisters! They opened a great little shop that we visited last October when we went to the Country Living Fair. Across the parking lot is a restored railroad depot that is now an event location. The event of the day was the auction. We hit a few shops along the way and I came home with several new treasures as did Rebecka. I did not "win" anything at the auction, but Rebecka did very well.<br /><br /><br /><br /><div><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEino687ndGAC3uuMJ1Xqarv8eNnHxtgxfJy6we7JazVpqNxKXjY2B6NmY3YstaDgL6KY7MLBtiaoooitaRefoh5TLjNpmSBhFK9AJpTEWB6mmQ9N4Ipn_0SAI8sOUftxS8xXpk4oOeNwOQ/s1600/IMG_0012.JPG"><img style="MARGIN: 0px 10px 10px 0px; WIDTH: 240px; FLOAT: left; HEIGHT: 320px; CURSOR: hand" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5615618273766264962" border="0" alt="" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEino687ndGAC3uuMJ1Xqarv8eNnHxtgxfJy6we7JazVpqNxKXjY2B6NmY3YstaDgL6KY7MLBtiaoooitaRefoh5TLjNpmSBhFK9AJpTEWB6mmQ9N4Ipn_0SAI8sOUftxS8xXpk4oOeNwOQ/s320/IMG_0012.JPG" /></a> I guess I was on a box kick, I bought three of them this trip. A nice funnel, a small wooden bowl, a tall glass globe and a Wisconsin Pottery Preserves Jar. Got a great little firkin that I will have to do a little prim-over to.<br /><br />Also came home with a great metal dustpan, a very large crackled and crazed off white platter, a pewter mug and a neat "trash can".<br /><br /><br /><br /><div><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgx-GNJ1K5UCZXSTXx2unMGdYk-6RvBx8A1pYTQpEB1uisl6ShKHNgDhRhTUsR9NP6KRZHoR_ndulNMTFGRNxZc2Egj33-t69VoIrUKyC1mvR3FoVgI6wFk3sEmolQ6ZRovZ7PYBXTSUZg/s1600/IMG_0011.JPG"><img style="MARGIN: 0px 10px 10px 0px; WIDTH: 320px; FLOAT: left; HEIGHT: 240px; CURSOR: hand" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5615618265288095490" border="0" alt="" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgx-GNJ1K5UCZXSTXx2unMGdYk-6RvBx8A1pYTQpEB1uisl6ShKHNgDhRhTUsR9NP6KRZHoR_ndulNMTFGRNxZc2Egj33-t69VoIrUKyC1mvR3FoVgI6wFk3sEmolQ6ZRovZ7PYBXTSUZg/s320/IMG_0011.JPG" /></a> One of my favorite things about traveling with Rebecka is all the hilarity that seems to follow us all around. First we saw a goat on the side of the road in the middle of nowhere...maybe not too funny to others, but because of past encounters with animal sightings we laughed out loud. The music at the two malls we stopped to visit was the craziest ever, that just got us tickled even more. We have great therapy in the car time, which when you are raising teenagers you surely need. The GPS in Rebecka's car played several jokes on us too, but always to our advantage and made us laugh even more. Our hotel had a shower, not a tub and half the wall was curved....think it was so late and we were so tired and that made us laugh. From vending machines, to oversleeping (we just about missed our free breakfast) from auction entertainment ( we enjoyed the conversations going on behind us as much as the action in front of us) to making peanut butter sandwiches in the car ( on bread we smashed with our treasures ) to so much more, it seemed everything was funny.<br /><br /><br /><br /><br /><div><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjlKbhyphenhyphenRB3dPvvHmE5qDa_WiuOhL09AFNs5xFEI-wxRrYGTEAfY-NB-CcK64g6PbUrPZ5uXETEAT9hTzoq1LfWOXr9ZRN42sTyovP4t4jrQkEizpps6Mpgwcu62hexkYzrImrsYeE4XccU/s1600/IMG_0009.JPG"><img style="MARGIN: 0px 10px 10px 0px; WIDTH: 320px; FLOAT: left; HEIGHT: 240px; CURSOR: hand" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5615618258257332114" border="0" alt="" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjlKbhyphenhyphenRB3dPvvHmE5qDa_WiuOhL09AFNs5xFEI-wxRrYGTEAfY-NB-CcK64g6PbUrPZ5uXETEAT9hTzoq1LfWOXr9ZRN42sTyovP4t4jrQkEizpps6Mpgwcu62hexkYzrImrsYeE4XccU/s320/IMG_0009.JPG" /></a> I am sure you have similar stories to share... I think that is part of what I enjoy so much about this passion of collecting things from the past; the part about spending time with friends and sharing the fun of the hunt with them. The girl time together whether it is two or twenty is such a blessing and a treat from the daily joys of raising a family and working at a job. It seems to me that no one but a prim friend can really appreciate the treasure you just found or the placement of that treasure in your home. In the decorating world I think it is unique....and to us is not decorating at all but the feathering of the nest to bring warmth and beauty to the place we call home. As Rebecka reflected on the very large cotton basket she "won" at the auction, we discussed it's beauty as an art craft, the many hands that had used it, the stories it could tell, how she would use it in her home and how it would remind her of the trip. The same is true of many of our other selections as well. Every item has a history and we added to it. We will continue to add to the history of those treasures as we use them in our homes.<br /><br /><br /><br /><br /><div><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEivPIZmnIGG-P6gZLKQrZJqLrDKhY8mG8KMvirleT8tX9eut2b01G3h0EANv6wXREPkHDzjBtLZo4yRliYpIt7ovFgNqNp9fHT1mJMMp_mG3PQxjqWO_fThw_w7O_CsUTKjDkIori-uVhg/s1600/IMG_0008.JPG"><img style="MARGIN: 0px 10px 10px 0px; WIDTH: 320px; FLOAT: left; HEIGHT: 240px; CURSOR: hand" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5615618251061051058" border="0" alt="" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEivPIZmnIGG-P6gZLKQrZJqLrDKhY8mG8KMvirleT8tX9eut2b01G3h0EANv6wXREPkHDzjBtLZo4yRliYpIt7ovFgNqNp9fHT1mJMMp_mG3PQxjqWO_fThw_w7O_CsUTKjDkIori-uVhg/s320/IMG_0008.JPG" /></a>If laughing makes you live longer, I am pretty sure I added about 10 years to my life. Now the weather is REALLY hot! Oh, how I already miss spring. I decided since it was so hot and there were so many errands on my list I should stop at my favorite store in my little town for a break. After all, the Prairie Rose gals had completely redone their booth and I had not seen it yet! They have the greatest ideas and a very simple color palate. Even though my house is prim colonial in decor, I am drawn to their khaki, white and black color scheme enhanced by silver pieces and some rusted items now and then. This creative pair seem to always have something that makes me say "AH-Hah, how clever is that!" and I often find special things for my home in their booth. Here are a few shots of their booth that you might enjoy. I would like to gleen 1/10 of their creative genius for myself but until then I will just continue to be amazed by their work and bring a little of it home from time to time. Hope your weekend is perfect! ~~ Beth </div></div>The Prim Colonialhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/12318341070204596629noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1400294791684446361.post-77772082561955656492011-06-01T06:43:00.002-05:002011-06-01T07:02:12.964-05:00Things Cats Like<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjdKHSfPe-ix6BR5VRacCrqNOePfa3Q6B4S26pLjodC_jI5vQEoHsoHfrxj-QC-1rt5akE02BPMqedBgOPpcwp6XynIlRsIkEXxB-MEhm_IP9b_8TJhs7JTyR1Uu59Bqr2_jXTovKZXhbE/s1600/IMG_1091.JPG"><img style="MARGIN: 0px 10px 10px 0px; WIDTH: 320px; FLOAT: left; HEIGHT: 240px; CURSOR: hand" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5613217120911251474" border="0" alt="" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjdKHSfPe-ix6BR5VRacCrqNOePfa3Q6B4S26pLjodC_jI5vQEoHsoHfrxj-QC-1rt5akE02BPMqedBgOPpcwp6XynIlRsIkEXxB-MEhm_IP9b_8TJhs7JTyR1Uu59Bqr2_jXTovKZXhbE/s320/IMG_1091.JPG" /></a> I find cats so interesting. They have such eccentric personalities it seems to me. Pets are such incredible blessings from God and we certainly enjoy our two kitties. <br />Cats seem to really like summer. There is something about this change in season that they enjoy. From the new baby birds flitting about on the lawn to the ice cream in your bowl, they seem to enjoy all things summer. Jackie naps a little more on the rug in the foyer. She sleeps like a dog, don't you think? Hairry Baker has a thing for flip flops....can't get enough of them, rolling on them and hugging them. They love the fresh fish we have during the summer and they love curling up in Olivia's lap as she enjoys her summer reading. As I think about it, I believe both kitties were born in early summer, so chances are they like this time of year simply because it's their birthdays. ~~ Beth <a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhrw9PL3Eu9R_GH3Sr1O-ds3H7NT1pEHuKz2fA5XyCmhoxnA0FyetmLdP37U6kc43ULcyVJF2s9GES9wMkGE9C3mS9xYhHJ-yVbQTiMpl6L9GNGZ1WNbvme5KnNUvN9pxEqGioZnacI0MM/s1600/IMG_1244.JPG"><img style="MARGIN: 0px 10px 10px 0px; I am thankful for those that have served and their families, as well as those that serve now. I pray that my daughter, married to a Marine, will never have to sacrifice the way so many have; losing a loved won in the continued venture to secure enduring freedom. </div><br /><br /><div>For so many, this day signifies the beginning of summer; the season of freedom.... most everything we know changes just a little at least to provide some summer freedom. School lets out, vacations from work occur, toes are freed from socks and shoes to open air sandals, windows are opened to let fresh air in, skin is bared to seek the sun, and the kitchen has moved to the grill. It is a liberating time, moving right into the celebration of the birth of this great nation on July 4th. Memorial Day is a super way to kick off the season of freedom by remembering those that perserved it for us. Let the season of Freedom Begin!~~ Beth </div></div></div></div></div></div></div></div></div></div></div>The Prim Colonialhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/12318341070204596629noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1400294791684446361.post-52710974167213532112011-05-23T21:53:00.003-05:002011-05-23T22:10:45.009-05:00At the top of the stairs.Happy Monday evening to you.....I am looking forward to participating in my first display chain tomorrow! Hope I can figure that one out.<br />Whenever you paint, I believe, you begin to think about the placement of things as you move items back into their "spots". Do you rehang the same pictures, do you move the furniture to new locations? Do you declutter, trade out or trade up? I certainly processed all of this as I painted the foyer. I studied blogs, magazines and asked friends. I did not rehang many items on the walls in my foyer, thinking something different was coming perhaps. As I moved up the stairs, I changed things a little as I went. When I got to the top of the stairs, I took a look around the landing area and knew a few tweeks were needed. <br /><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjHNjjmBqY8cFBKFkj2VGjx-ebnDptuB3smavwiuzRIrHaoLdf-CDdv8Yn0lEA7KyiZdCqdfWH2pySw1oG5agLBFWEyv4BEEmDgdyjNrvKwfie-LNL-muChagwdkgyIypuA0Pi_nX_Xrkk/s1600/IMG_1078.JPG"><img style="WIDTH: 240px; HEIGHT: 320px; CURSOR: hand" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5610111369718527074" border="0" alt="" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjHNjjmBqY8cFBKFkj2VGjx-ebnDptuB3smavwiuzRIrHaoLdf-CDdv8Yn0lEA7KyiZdCqdfWH2pySw1oG5agLBFWEyv4BEEmDgdyjNrvKwfie-LNL-muChagwdkgyIypuA0Pi_nX_Xrkk/s320/IMG_1078.JPG" /></a> <a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjDAOqdCQnbUnmZzsld48dX-2xpucV4sez-tNTgPC4GLtR28gItZFWFGOaeezzGXt_oKmmOEIJ83wF8-9_bI7poMkednYAssp-WaFE0kWOqX3SVg84iNi3jSEkpjK9DjgmXHxNp8eqNlXw/s1600/IMG_1079.JPG"><img style="WIDTH: 240px; HEIGHT: 320px; CURSOR: hand" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5610111306177146914" border="0" alt="" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjDAOqdCQnbUnmZzsld48dX-2xpucV4sez-tNTgPC4GLtR28gItZFWFGOaeezzGXt_oKmmOEIJ83wF8-9_bI7poMkednYAssp-WaFE0kWOqX3SVg84iNi3jSEkpjK9DjgmXHxNp8eqNlXw/s320/IMG_1079.JPG" /></a>I decided my little pie safe needed to have a few quilts removed and the ones left neatly folded and stacked, trying to coordinate the colors better. I changed around a few chairs. I added a sweet thirft store find, the darling egg basket. My grandmother's china cabinet sits at the top of the stairs filled with old family photos and a few special china pieces. This did not suit me any longer! I emptied it out completely and have decided it is to be filled with old books ( well, gotta go shopping, oh darn! ) and other colonial items. <br /><br /><div><br /><div><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhpUFRQIWLOjQ3xxx8XScq4CGwmlbkt2lKEkGelIBhOFI8HgNfHrQsPCKoS8SvBP_7ac2PWRA4e5LHuYlrtPQOEnc74gLogTPHVL1-EdfVeZ8j_8R6Gf_EUFSkwAg0bi0EOGl6PdkU8oGw/s1600/IMG_1075.JPG"><img style="WIDTH: 240px; HEIGHT: 320px; CURSOR: hand" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5610111197802418050" border="0" alt="" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhpUFRQIWLOjQ3xxx8XScq4CGwmlbkt2lKEkGelIBhOFI8HgNfHrQsPCKoS8SvBP_7ac2PWRA4e5LHuYlrtPQOEnc74gLogTPHVL1-EdfVeZ8j_8R6Gf_EUFSkwAg0bi0EOGl6PdkU8oGw/s320/IMG_1075.JPG" /></a><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhYur6xmGb2N8ARYyh43TuAiCLZaQnvwObwfOSTBVMA8x8sX62B0PZ2OU9QP1j2sI6sbgTzdwGkljBXqWjBwrncQctqXyegF9MEFkQKzPUiR23QMtsEfg4u2OrQWu0hFkOgLm8WrrvCKb0/s1600/IMG_1080.JPG"><img style="WIDTH: 240px; HEIGHT: 320px; CURSOR: hand" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5610111220991827138" border="0" alt="" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhYur6xmGb2N8ARYyh43TuAiCLZaQnvwObwfOSTBVMA8x8sX62B0PZ2OU9QP1j2sI6sbgTzdwGkljBXqWjBwrncQctqXyegF9MEFkQKzPUiR23QMtsEfg4u2OrQWu0hFkOgLm8WrrvCKb0/s320/IMG_1080.JPG" /></a>My freshly painted walls have given me a new canvas. Since I am not talented in the arts, I am at least giving a try at making my house a warm and cozy reflection of a time gone by. It will always be a work in progress, and it may never be a "masterpiece", but the joy is in the crafting, throughout the house and at the top of the stairs. </div></div>The Prim Colonialhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/12318341070204596629noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1400294791684446361.post-37640915035924647552011-05-22T12:53:00.008-05:002011-05-22T13:47:41.132-05:00Prim Project<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgoHR6hCdKOd1WRlcNUSfZJgQ4EOQKS8LKEkp4T8XrpIyPnfw4C2yc8F6Xkgk8kDIEWJ5CZlard65rQFiC2tOkF3zubck7VXIotf9JE_HB_fNdPQoI175sNwiUjbU21_2Jd_REUAoNQEUw/s1600/IMG_1082.JPG"><img style="MARGIN: 0px 10px 10px 0px; WIDTH: 240px; FLOAT: left; HEIGHT: 320px; CURSOR: hand" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5609613736154254658" border="0" alt="" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgoHR6hCdKOd1WRlcNUSfZJgQ4EOQKS8LKEkp4T8XrpIyPnfw4C2yc8F6Xkgk8kDIEWJ5CZlard65rQFiC2tOkF3zubck7VXIotf9JE_HB_fNdPQoI175sNwiUjbU21_2Jd_REUAoNQEUw/s320/IMG_1082.JPG" /></a> Jackie, one of our two cats, loves to bask in the sun on this chair in our foyer. That, and move the rug around behind the front door. <br /><br /><div>While my car was at the garage on Friday, my dear friend Rebecka was kind enough to pick me up for a little junking excursion.....like we needed an excuse! We visited a few local shops and both found a few things! Rebecka selected a leather wingback swivel desk chair, perfectly prim for her home. I found a ladderback chair with arms that I will post a photo of later! I also found a sweet small oak mirror and a little jelly cupboard that needed some primming. I had been looking for an old cabinet to use on the countertop to house all the hair products and lotions that Olivia loves. This little cupboard will do nicely until I find an old cabinet. I followed your fine example of make do projects by taping off the tin, painting the cabinet black, sanding and scuffing it, followed by a good coat of stain. I think it turned out well and as you can see all the products now have a nice home.....goodbye countertop clutter. Let me know what you think!
